I can say that the Smith and Wesson model 27-2 started having a N prefix to the serial number in 1969.These model 27-2 were made until 1981,when the model 27-3 began production.If your model 27-2 has the target trigger,target hammer,partridge type front sight on a 6in barrel and Goncalo Alves grips then these were started in 1975.

Before that the models just had names. A Combat Masterpiece produced before the Model 15 designation was applied can be called a Pre-15.
