The Lost Sector was designated to drop Helmets. We just got lucky like you. You can run them in a fireteam but exotics only drop on solo clears. You can get exotics, but they will not be that days slot specific nor does it have bad luck protection. For the time it takes to complete one when compared to Legend Lost Sectors, the drop rate increase isn't noticeable enough. You are always better off going for Legend clears, as they are significantly faster to complete, whilst having a similar enough drop rate (IIRC Legend has a 20% or 25% drop rate, where as Master has a 30% or 35% rate).

Say you get one rune each time you complete a lost sector and don't get an exotic--maybe two if you don't die. Each one increases your drop chance by 10% when slotted in, except for number seven which guarantees a drop on your next completion. But any in your belt get wiped out whenever an exotic piece drops.

Back when you could blow through a lost sector in a minute or two it was less of an issue, but now even an experienced player with a good build is going to spend 5+ minutes a run, and when drop rates are this low, you'll typically have an hour pass before you'll even see a single exotic piece, never mind the one you're farming for.
