The easiest way to farm animals, at least for me, is to stick near water sources. Since I am almost always playing on Layton Lake District, I stay to Balmont Lake and the huge-ass lake to the east of it. Once I'm at the lake, I simply walk around it until I see an animal or I hear a call.
