The Natchez Association for the Preservation of African American Culture (NAPAC) was created in 1990 to research, collect, exhibit, interpret and preserve the cultural and historical contributions of African Americans in the growth of Natchez and the nation. And so began, the Natchez Museum of African American Culture, May 4, 1991.

The National Black Doll Museum has a three-fold mission: to nurture self-esteem, to promote cultural diversity, and to preserve the history of black dolls by educating the public on their significance. In pursuit of our mission, we use Black dolls as both our subject and our artistic medium. It was established by an Act of Congress in 2003, following decades of efforts to promote and highlight the contributions of African Americans. To date, the Museum has collected more than 40,000 artifacts. The Museum opened to the public on September 24, 2016, as the 19th museum of the Smithsonian Institution.
