With these abnormal temperatures at the end of January and February you are giving us ice fishing guide extreme stress and anxiety. Yes, we have ice. Yes we have safe ice.
Not great, but there are still Walleyes and Perch deep. A lot of the Perch are on the smaller side, but we managed quite a few 9-10 inchers with a few 11-12’s mixed in. The only problem with fishing in deeper than 33 feet of water, they are probably all dead. The smaller Perch and the BIG Walleyes cannot handle the rapid change in pressure.

Those two adjustments made all the different though and we were headed to the launch by 1:00. Buck shots were the key, and we were in two spots on the lake, one deep/one shallow. The deep was 36 feet of water, the shallow was bewteen 5-15 feet of water. With the weather change from bitter cold back to mild, I think the Perch and definitely the Walleyes are about to go off, get ready!! Good Luck out there!

The conditions have not gotten better at all. In some cases it’s gotten worse. Again, there are some slush pockets on Devils Lake that will swallow you up.
December 11, 2022. . Finally have a few days on the ice guiding up here on Devils Lake. The cold snap definitely firmed up the ice and I’d say we have on average 10 plus inches all over the lake. Quite a few ridges out there, most are quiet at the moment, but with the snow they are forecasting that will change also.A large flock of our flying friends hunkered down in open water on the north end of Creel until mid-December when it finally froze over so ice is still playing catch-up. We now have groups following us out to our fish houses with full-size vehicles. After a brief warm-up, the weather is supposed to get cold again, which should keep the fish biting.Jan 31, 2023 ... The fish always seem to be in the same areas year in and year out at this time. The mid-section of winter can vary from year to year. Lake Sakakawea has risen over 11 feet since ice out and Devils Lake has gained 3 feet! Fresh water into these systems is a huge shot in the arm for the future of these fisheries.
