Then you’ll have the option to start a kingdom, but you’ll need lots of money and a decent starting army. My strat was waiting for rebellions and then taking the castle without inquiring too much war debt.

Your own kingdom sucks. I've probably put about 500+ hours in Bannerlord now and can say fairly safely that making your own kingdom sucks. It's never fun to do and it's tolerable to just join a kingdom, stay in it and not do anything. Make sure you have healthy garrisons in all your settlements before you start. Other kingdoms will be more likely to war and conduct sieges if they think your towns are undefended. Garrisons are very expensive however, so having closer to a million or more gold may be prudent.
