The Sportsman is different in that it is a 3 shot, 1 in the chamber and 2 in the mag. Parts of sames gauge are interchangeable. Mag extension from 870 will fit an 11-48. Sportsman 48 Will Not Cycle. Hello! I'm working on a 1953 vintage Remington Sportsman 48, 12 gauge that fires, but does not cycle. The barrel does retract into the receiver, but the bolt appears to reach a high-friction point about two-thirds of the way through its travel. I've cleaned and lightly lubed the recoil spring and friction rings.Bought a Remington Sportsman 48 (16 gauge) from a guy at work, got it cheap because it wouldn't cycle shells out. I tore it down (pulled the bolt and the trigger) and cleaned it, now it cycles sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.
